TV

I often find myself going back and watching certain shows over and over again, which makes it easy to determine which are my favourites.

Top 15

#1

The Ricky Gervais Show

Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant & Karl Pilkington

The Ricky Gervais Show is essentially an animated podcast that was recorded over a period of 3 years, in which Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant have a series of bizarre conversations with their friend Karl Pilkington. It is, without doubt, the funniest thing I have ever seen.

#2

Doctor Who (Seasons 1-5)

Written by Russel T Davies

I am deliberately excluding the newer seasons of the show (for many, many reasons), but the first 5 seasons of Doctor Who are some of my favourites of all time. This was the golden age, a period of time to which sadly we can never return.

#3

Gavin & Stacey

Written by James Corden & Ruth Jones

One of the most quintessentially British sitcoms ever made, Gavin & Stacey is an iconic pillar in British comedy, and one of the most endearing and heartwarming love stories ever told.

#4

The Inbetweeners

Created by Iain Morris & Damon Beesley

The most accurate portrayal of British teenage life probably ever made, The Inbetweeners is both painfully relateable and outstandingly funny.

#5

Top Gear

Starring Jeremy Clarckson, Richard Hammond & James May

A show about cars that isn't really about cars, Top Gear is at its best a comedy programme that happens to feature cars quite frequently. The highlights of the show are definitely the more large scale adventures the trio go on, and it's their relationship that made the show one of the biggest and most beloved in the world.

#6

Still Game

Created by Ford Kiernan & Greg Hemphill

Classic Scottish comedy, a show I'm so nostalgic for. Some of the best sitcom writing ever, coupled with quotable lines of Scottish humor.

#7

The Thick Of It

Armando Iannucci

A hilariously biting satire of the UK government, The Thick Of It has only become more relevant over time, as it becomes increasingly clear that those in power are even more inept than the ones in the show.

#8

South Park

Trey Parker & Matt Stone

People often write off South Park as crass and immature, but they fail to realise the genius of the show is that it uses absurdism to provide commentary on modern society. It is easily one of the funniest and most relevant shows on TV, succeeding where many others have failed in the past.

#9

American Vandal

Created by Dan Perrault & Tony Yacenda

A hilarious satire of crime documentaries, American Vandal is probably the best thing Netflix has ever produced.

#10

Fawlty Towers

Written by John Cleese & Connie Booth

An absolute classic of British comedy, Fawlty Towers manages to be just as funny today as it was when it came out over 40 years ago.

#11

Death Note

Created by Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata

Death Note was my introduction to anime, and I don't think there is a better show to recommend to people to get them started. Just a riveting series with a unique premise and some really fantastic character design.

#12

The IT Crowd

Starring Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade & Katherine Parkinson

The IT Crowd is beloved by many people, but even more so by those like myself who work in Computing. God bless this show for giving us Maurice Moss.

#13

An Idiot Abroad

Karl Pilkington

The most hilarious travel show ever made, An Idiot Abroad is essentially a massive practical joke played on Karl Pilkington by his mates Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant as they send him around the world to places he really doesn't want to be.

#14

The Office (UK)

Created by Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant

The classic UK sitcom that inspired the US remake. I like both versions of The Office, but for me, the UK version will always be the best for its grounded humour and oftentimes heartbreaking portrayal of real people and the struggles of their everyday lives.

#15

Breaking Bad

Created by Vince Gilligan

One of the finest pieces of television ever made, Breaking Bad is the perfect example of how to craft an antihero.
